Senior Manager, User Experience Engineering

The Performance Engineering team supporting the Lodging Tech at Expedia is a group of specialist engineers obsessed with delivering the fastest experience for our travellers. The team engages with product and platform teams to ensure we get the most of the EG Travel platform and create experiences for Desktop and mobile devices. Our team works across the tech stack from UI to backend services. Being relevant in the industry standards for web performance is part of job.

We ship code multiple times a day and constantly strive to improve our delivery. Improving means constantly learning and making mistakes, something our team embraces. We rigorously use data and experiments to validate our hypothesis about customer behaviour — this is how we settle on features to build, areas to improve and learn how effective our contributions are.
What you’ll do:
Identify areas of improvements within the code and suggests solutions
Identify and mentor critical talent within subdivision
Combine and share knowledge and skills in more than one functional area to promote efficiency in the department or business unit/function
Identify team educational and training needs and develop programs or recruit specialists to meet those training needs
Acquire resources needed to reach individual and team goals
Prioritise team morale and productivity, celebrating team accomplishments
Promote working together among team members and encourage others to cooperate and coordinate efforts
Craft the nature of their team by building team rituals, processes and practices that build strong team bonds and an open, trusting environment where diverse viewpoints, opinions, approaches, candid conversations, and critiques can happen
Anticipate and recognise bottlenecks in work processes between teams and make suggestions for ongoing improvement
Develop technology phase-out planning in line with the product roadmaps
Partner with the business to have a clear understanding of how the technology stack is tied to business outcomes and our bottom line
Act as a spokesperson for software design standard methodologies
Gain insight into how customers use technology for their advantage and apply this knowledge to suggest areas for improvement
Examine inefficiencies in the existing stack operation and encourage engineers to improve them
Bridge the gap in discussions between technology and non-technology personnel
Report on team status faithfully and listen for suggestions to improve lagging project work
Who you are:
Bachelor's degree in related technical field; or equivalent related professional experience
An established people leader who leads a larger team of engineers (~6-10 people) or smaller teams of the approximately similar size
Collaborate with management and product to balance the needs of team wellbeing, features, and system maintenance and operation
Experience in people management in various locations
Strong technical acuity with solid understanding of multiple technologies or languages and responsibility for multiple technical domains
Mentor individual contributors as well as managers on team
Deliver and influence product roadmap, working in with product team
Define a team’s goals and how they fit a business need across multiple teams working together
Experience with AWS technologies highly desired including but not limited to AWS: EC2, S3
Strong experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, JSON
Experience with jQuery, React, NodeJS, Apache Tomcat, Spring MVC, Spring Boot, Docker, Gradle
