Manager, Software Development Engineering

Performance Engineering team for Lodging Tech at Expedia is a group of specialist engineers obsessed with delivering the fastest experience for our travelers. The team engages with product and platform teams to ensure we get the most of the EG Travel platform and create experiences for Desktop and mobile devices. The team works across the tech stack from UI to backend services.

Our team does not just innovate in the user interface; the engineering team is committed to innovating and pushing the bounds of continuous delivery. We ship code multiple times a day and constantly strive to improve our delivery. Improving means constantly learning and making mistakes, something our team embraces. Do you want to invent, publish, and share new ways of quickly delivering web applications to customers? We rigorously use data and experiments to validate our hypothesis about customer behavior — this is how we settle on features to build and how effective our contributions are.

What you’ll do:

  • Coach and mentor engineers of varying levels within your organization for career development and progression

  • Build a team of hard-working software engineers applying your experience screening, interviewing, and growing a development team

  • Participate in and lead design and architecture reviews, handle production incidents, and run code reviews

  • Lead a team of Engineers in implementing high quality and scalable services to support existing/new functionality, UI updates to ensure that the brands are true to their promise, identify gaps in existing infrastructure and take charge of implementing new as needed to drive brand growth

  • Development, testing and implementation of software that meets established specifications on time and budget

  • Apply industry standards and use new technologies to improve production, quality, and system performance

  • Work closely with development, program management, test, operations, and product management to define and build roadmap

  • Ensure that features deployed have technical integrity and stability

  • Lead both technical leads and individual contributors, including ongoing training and development performance evaluations, coaching, recruiting, and disciplinary actions

  • Bridge the gap in discussions between technology and non-technology personnel. Report on team status faithfully and listen for suggestions to improve lagging project work

  • Evaluate current team projects or goals and identify the relevant skills and expertise needed to accomplish them

Who you are:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in a related Technical field; or Equivalent related professional experience

  • Leading (formally) least at 3 multi-quarter projects and having participated in peer’s performance evaluations by providing technical assessment and feedback

  • Understand when and how to reward and recognize team members

  • Experience as a mentor for individual contributors on a team

  • Ability to defined team goals and how they fit a business need – working as an enabler for the team to then meet these goals

  • Experience delivering solutions to business problems at the project level

  • Ability to collaborate with the product team you have delivered a product roadmap

  • Experience with AWS technologies highly desired including but not limited to AWS: EC2, S3, Lambda

  • Expertise in Java and building RESTful Micro Services

  • Strong experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, JSON

  • Experience with jQuery, React, NodeJS, Apache Tomcat, Spring MVC, Spring Boot, Docker, Gradle, Grunt

  • Experience developing in Java for large ecommerce sites and its associated technology stacks
