Data Scientist II, Headcount Allocation Analytics

Join us at Expedia Group in highly dynamic industry and use your Analytical expertise to help steer the strategic decision making of where and how to optimally allocate our sales team accounting for both market dynamics and business constraints.

The Data Scientist II of Headcount Allocation will be part of a larger team of 4 people reporting to the Senior Manager of Core Operations Analytics. This person will be responsible to build mathematical models to solve Constraint Optimization problems in the field of Headcount optimization. The types of business problems this person will have to answer include questions such as “How many headcounts do I need and where in order to maximize my Return on Investment (RoI)?” / “Assuming that I only have X headcounts to allocate, what would be the optimal location/role for them to be?” / “Given the known market dynamics, what degree of flexibility does each model option allows?”. While solving for those optimization problems, the data scientist will account for all relevant constraint (e.g., productivity, geographical limitations).

The successful candidate will be responsible for most of the headcount allocation problematic, including problem definition, problem solving, machine-learning/algorithm building, stakeholder management. In complement of developing the optimization model/engine, the candidate will also be responsible to build the dynamic tool allowing stakeholder to easily monitor current/recommended headcount allocation and observed impact on relevant leading indicators. What you’ll do:

  • Manage stakeholders with frequent communication and expectation management
  • Frame business challenges as analytical problem and apply problem solving techniques to break it down into concrete set of analytical tasks
  • Extract data from multiple data sources and combine them into the required datasets for model building or analytics
  • Assess and evaluate various methods to solve for Constraint Optimization business problem
  • Apply your knowledge with Python, Scala or R, or any other major ML programming language
  • Become knowledgeable in EG visualization tools, creating complex calculations using advanced features and building complex charts with limited supervision
  • Articulate clearly and confidently decision-making rationale, methodology and recommendation to both technical and non-technical partners across various levels of the organization
  • Be accountable to design/build the Headcount Allocation recommendation model and develop the visualization to enable leadership to monitor current situation and gap to optimal output
  • Partner closely with your peers within the Core Operations Analytics team and the broader Lodging Analytics organization to ensure best practice sharing and build on each other work

Who you are:

  • Bachelor's, Master's, PhD, or Equivalent Experience; Mathematics, Science, Statistics or Technical degree preferred otherwise relevant experience is applicable
  • 2+ year of relevant experience in Analytics team working with large amount of data – ideally with experience in developing constraint optimization models
  • Display strong domain knowledge, business acumen and critical reasoning skills
  • Bias for action and ability to function independently with minimal direction 
  • Applied knowledge of SQL and familiar with Python, R, or any other major ML programming language
  • Excellent data visualization skills and exposure to tools like Tableau/Power BI/…
  • Experienced in the fundamentals of big data architecture (streaming events, data lakes, analytics engines) and relational database models.
