Machine Learning Scientist III

United Kingdom - London

APPLY NOW

Team description:

The Reinforcement Learning team applies RL and multi-armed bandit techniques to optimise experiences at scale in real time. Our platform is a contextual multi-armed bandit AI service that serves multivariate user experiences, considers the unique context of each visitor, and quickly adapts to user behavior in order to optimize user experiences at scale. It unlocks the ability to iterate to optimal product solutions far more quickly than traditional A/B testing, and it even unlocks the ability to handle ever-changing content and continuous "cold start" situations gracefully.

Business Contribution/Impact:

We optimise hundreds of millions of customer interactions across the entire Expedia Group travel platform driving $10MMs of profit through optimised experiences.

What you’ll do:

Machine Learning:

  • You will apply an understanding of supervised learning, unsupervised learning and reinforcement learning theory.

  • You will tackle business problems by applying reinforcement learning models, algorithms and techniques using in-house and open source libraries.

  • You will modify/adapt to models and techniques to suit business needs.

  • You will independently conduct proper model performance evaluation without help.

Machine Learning Engineering:

  • You will write code that is clean, maintainable, optimized, modular with good naming conventions and in a way that enables efficient contribution and collaboration on a common code base shared between MLSs and MLEs.

Model Design:

  • You will select valid approaches, appropriate in terms of level of effort, favoring iterative delivery that solves for the objective, not the ask (i.e., not just order-taking). Use advanced and sophisticated understanding of the business problem space to inform the design of the solution.

  • You will seek relevant academic papers and experience to point out strengths and weaknesses of current models and recommends more sophisticated designs when needed.

Statistics:

  • You will apply a range of common statistical methods and design complex experiments to understand and solve business problems.

  • You will consider underlying assumptions to pick the ideal method for problem solving.

Visualization:

  • You will apply data visualization principles consistently resulting in clear and consistent outcomes and build complex charts with little supervision.

Communication and presentation:

  • You will build clear, concise and well-structured functional material (e.g. policies & and procedures, guidelines, presentations, messages) and recommend improvements to existing material.

  • You will influence action and results through writing clearly in an accessible way for a wide audience. Anticipate questions, structuring presentations around a clear narrative, and is concise in what's included. Present clearly and engagingly.

Stakeholder and project management:

  • You will frame challenging business problems as a data science problem and concrete set of tasks.

  • You will leverage others’ skills, knowledge and expertise effectively in problem solving and delivering impact.

  • You will manage stakeholders with frequent communication, expectation management, meeting deadlines and minimizing surprises.

Who you are:

  • Bachelor's, Master’s, PhD degree in a Technical field; or Equivalent related professional experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain multiple data science project/product in production environments.

  • Have significant experience in at least one major ML programming language (Python, Scala…) and familiar with others.

  • Experienced in industrial application of machine learning.

  • Demonstrated understanding of the limitations of selected methods.

  • Solid understanding of hypothesis testing.
