Principal Content Designer

At Expedia Group, our mission is to power global travel for everyone, everywhere. As a Principal Content Designer on our XD (Experience Design) team, you'll help us achieve that mission by envisioning and crafting human-centered, enterprise-level content solutions that improve the customer experience and bring harmony to Expedia’s product content ecosystem.  

This is not a marketing or communications design role. Principal Content Designers in XD are experienced individual contributors with deep expertise in product content design and UX content strategy. They define and drive the approach to content design in a multidisciplinary product team that includes UX researchers, product designers, design engineers, and other specializations.  

While not people managers, Principal Content Designers are able to inspire greatness in others and influence diverse teams toward common outcomes. They are active members of our Content Design practice who evangelize our thinking, contribute to our community of practice, and set the standard for UX content strategy and design at Expedia Group.  

What you’ll do:  

Reporting directly to our Head of Content Design, you'll own the vision for content, as well as the approach to content design, across a vast and complex product area. As a leading voice in content strategy and content design, you'll also serve as an advocate for our practice and a role model for our team members. Chief among your responsibilities as a Principal Content Designer:   

  • Define the edges, depths, strategies, and outcomes for content design in large and undefined problem spaces

  • Partner with senior leaders across Expedia Group to ensure that our product content solutions account for — but never reveal — the complexity of our business and platform

  • Contribute thinking and frameworks to the Expedia Group Design System

  • Collaborate with leaders in Brand, Marketing, Operations, and other divisions to establish and roll out cohesive, meaningful content guidelines for the company

  • Employ content modeling and related techniques, and partner with leaders in Engineering and Content Systems to tackle infrastructural content challenges

  • Apply sophisticated concepts around UI frameworks, modularity, localization, and reuse to craft content solutions that scal

  • Contribute to growing and evolving our Content Strategy practice as an inspiring leader both in and outside of the company

  • Propose, build, and train others in scalable content strategy/design artifacts, including playbooks, patterns, and problem-solving frameworks

  • Apply your expertise in storytelling and persuasion to connect vision, strategy, and action plans at the organizational level

Who you are:  


We're not expecting you to be a specialist in everything listed here, but we do ask that you demonstrate principal-level expertise in whichever methods you apply. We're also looking for people who will contribute frameworks to our growing team and our design system, so we're excited to see how you scale your thinking!   

  • 5+ years of demonstrated experience in UX content strategy and/or product content design 

  • Demonstrated expertise in core skills such as Content Mapping and Modeling, Content Planning and Sourcing, Conversational Design, Information Architecture, UX Writing, and Storytelling (This is not a content marketing role.)  

  • Proven experience working on large-scale, systemic content challenges, as well as experience with designing interconnected content solutions. Platform or two-sided marketplace experience is a plus!  

  • Experience contributing to an enterprise design system  

  • Ability to audit, analyze, architect, design, and present content solutions independently using established frameworks

  • Deep understanding of human-centered design (HCD) practices, and a point of view about content's role in the design process

  • Ability to collaborate with senior leaders across practice areas — particularly those with approaches and perspectives different from your own — to generate effective solutions to user problems

  • A thoughtful, empathetic, and inclusive approach to content design that meets every user where they are

  • Expertise in facilitation, workshop design, presentation, and storytelling

  • A passion for travel and for our mission

  • A portfolio of shipped (not just conceptual) work that demonstrates your skills and methods
