As a Content Design Director on our XD (Experience Design) team, you'll contribute to that mission by helping to shape the future of our centralized Content Design practice. Reporting directly to our Head of Content Design, you’ll manage a team of UX leaders and senior practitioners whose work in product content spans the end-to-end customer experience across all Expedia Group brands and customer types.  

This is not a marketing, communications, or editorial role. As a product-design leader, you have a portfolio of work that demonstrates expertise in UX content strategy and product content design. As a UX professional, you show up with openness and a beginner's mentality, eager to learn from partners and customers. And, as a leader of people, you bring a thoughtful, authentic approach that ignites curiosity, up-levels hidden talents, and creates safe spaces for content designers to do their best work.  

What you’ll do:   

As Content Design Director, you'll serve as a creative leader within our practice and an important operational presence across Expedia Group. Chief among your responsibilities:   

  • Team with Content Design leadership to establish the mission, vision, values, goals, ceremonies, and operating metrics for the practice

  • Work directly with our Head of Content Design to retain top talent and continuously improve our external talent and recruiting brand. Help to make our team not just a center of excellence, but a center of gravity!  

  • Serve as an operational partner to Design Directors and senior leaders in Product and Technology, ensuring that content designers are focused on the right business and customer priorities

  • Build and maintain positive strategic relationships with leaders in other divisions (Platform, Operations, Marketing, SEO, and others) to ensure a unified content strategy across the company

  • Partner with Design Strategists, Service Designers, and other emerging functions to develop rich, connected communities of practice within our Experience Design group

  • Set the standard for content design and UX content strategy in ways that inspire and uplift others within a team

  • Mentor managers on building trusting, candid relationships with their teams to enable productive development conversations 

  • Guide the team to develop and adapt human-centered processes that facilitate high-quality design work

  • Contribute to our culture of constructive design critique, enabling team members to realize their potential

  • Lead strategic work as needed — for example, partnering with Brand Strategy or Design Systems to develop frameworks for orchestrating content across products 

  • Apply your expertise in storytelling and persuasion to build materials that connect vision, strategy, and action plans at the organization level

Who you are:  

We're not expecting you to be a specialist in everything listed here, but we do ask that you demonstrate director-level expertise in whichever methods you apply. We're also looking for people who will contribute frameworks to our growing team and our design system, so we're excited to see how you scale your thinking!   

  • 5+ years of experience as a senior leader in content design and/or UX content strategy on a centralized UX design team

  • Proven expertise both as a practitioner and as a mentor in techniques such as Content Mapping and Modeling, Conversational Design, Information Architecture, UX Writing, and Storytelling

  • Experience in leadership of second-level managers and lead-level individual contributors. 

  • Experience building, scaling, and motivating content teams while minimizing attrition, encouraging trust, and maintaining a positive external talent brand

  • Deep understanding of human-centered design (HCD) practices, and a point of view about content's role in the design process

  • Ability to collaborate with senior leaders across practice areas — particularly those with approaches and perspectives different from your own — to generate effective solutions

  • A thoughtful, empathetic, and inclusive approach to content design that meets every user where they are

  • Expert skills in facilitation, workshop design, presentation, and storytelling

  • A passion for travel and for our mission

  • A portfolio of work that demonstrates your expertise
