Manager, Software Development Engineering
The Core Platform team is a part of the Travel Experience Platform org which enables developers across Expedia Group to build and maintain their applications, user experiences and business domains, with reduced friction and increased use of cross-EG solutions and communities of practice.
Our focus is to develop technology platforms/frameworks that help develop reliable, scalable, production-ready, and performant applications in an accelerated manner. Application developers can go from zero to app within minutes using our templates/generators and then extend, maintain, and evolve the application using our libraries/modules/plugins. This results in increased developer efficiency worth millions of dollars.
Development managers ‘cover a lot of bases’ in terms of staff, development, quality, projects, and operations. This position provides the chance to lead a team of first-rate engineers in the creation of our next generation of innovative platforms for building the travel shopping experience of the future! Outstanding candidates have an established history of developing and delivering sophisticated distributed software systems and are driven to achieve results in a fast paced, agile environment.
What you’ll do:
Drive your team to innovate and deliver roadmap features with agility and high quality
You will develop and maintain software applications and platforms by using a variety of tools while acting as a spokesperson for software design standards and operational excellence
Effectively manage the triage process. Also Provide operational support for the services you own. This includes providing an on-call rotation and ensuring timely incident response to resolve issues
You’ll work with tech partners to drive operational health improvements, root cause analysis, postmortem discussions, and their associated remediation's that serve to improve reliability and sub-linearly scale operations
Actively oversee resource allocation to ensure delivery of people services and projects, creatively use engineering team resources and budget to accelerate achievement of goals
You will ensure that your team has a clear understanding of requirements; identify technical issues and provide data to support solutions
Act as a catalyst to drive your staff's career development by providing meaningful feedback, coaching, and seeking opportunities within and outside of your team
Focus on quality delivery: Deliver solutions to business problems spanning teams, Influence product roadmap, ensure the flawless execution of new ideas or approaches, determine and prioritize different phases of delivery
Stay on top of industry trends. Examine inefficiencies in the existing stack operation and encourage engineers to improve them
You will apply new insights or approaches to improve team outputs
Who you are:
Bachelor's degree or Masters in a related technical field; or equivalent related professional experience
Hands-on technical lead for at least 3 multi-quarter projects
Experience in high traffic, highly available, resilient, and secure web application development (preferably in AWS EC2/ECS and Kubernetes environments)
Thorough understanding of software development technologies, specifically those used in large-scale, end-to-end distributed solutions
Solid grasp of Agile Software Development mechanisms
Have strong technical acuity which allows you to be responsible for a technical domain.
You understand when and how to reward and recognize team members
You have acted as a mentor for individual contributors on a team
You have defined team goals and how they fit a business need – working as an enabler for the team to then meet these goals
Ability to identify business problems at the project level and provide solutions.
Collaborating closely with the product team you have delivered a product roadmap
