Senior Corporate Counsel, Privacy

Senior Corporate Privacy Counsel has responsibility in managing privacy issues for the Expedia Group companies in the EMEA Region. The Expedia in-house privacy team consists of experienced attorneys and paralegals who advise all EG Brands worldwide on compliance with global privacy laws.

The position will lead a variety of sophisticated privacy matters in EMEA, including; responding to inquiries from privacy regulators, assisting customer service with privacy complaints, tracking privacy legislation, advising on privacy and data security, handling provisions in contracts, providing privacy training to business clients, and managing outside counsel resources in the region.

This position will be based in London and report to the Senior Director, Privacy.

What you’ll do:

  • Advise legal and business teams on compliant and efficient use of personal information across Expedia Group brands in EMEA
  • Review and document internal and external procedures and controls related to data handling, including transferring and accessing personal data
  • Work with the privacy team to oversee developments in privacy laws and regulatory guidance
  • Keep the business and legal teams apprised of changes
  • Proactively manage EMEA regulatory filing, privacy notices and policies
  • Assist with customer and employee data related requests where required
  • Complete privacy impact assessments for new products, critical initiatives or changes in processes
  • Develop, implement and maintain standardized privacy and data security contract templates to drive consistency and efficiency for the business and the legal department
  • Support all colleagues with review and negotiation of applicable privacy language for affiliate, vendor and client agreements
  • Collaborate with colleagues and partners in government affairs, product, engineering, tax and other teams on key privacy initiatives
  • Solve legal problems in innovative and commercially pragmatic ways and partner strongly with your colleagues
  • Direct research and other work with regional outside legal counsel

Who you are:

  • A Law Degree with qualification to practice in the UK or in another equivalent law jurisdiction;
  • Demonstrated experience as a practicing attorney with a core focus on privacy in an outstanding law firm and/or in a fast-paced in-house legal environment
  • Clear and concise communication, interpersonal skills and a desire for continuous self-improvement
  • Quick learner, thrive in a team environment and look for opportunities to take initiative
  • Have a genuine passion for privacy and technology
  • Actively seek to stay up to date with this fast-paced area of law
  • Good understanding of e-commerce technologies and business models, including location-based services, behavioral targeting and online advertising
  • Have a solid understanding of how privacy law and regulation applies
  • Possess the ability to assess and communicate risk within the context of business goals
  • Ability to work on a wide range and high volume of sophisticated matters with minimal direction
  • Record of establishing strong working relationships with business clients and with legal colleagues
  • Experience supporting junior members of the team to grow and develop
  • Some M&A and bankruptcy experience a plus
  • International experience and in-house experience are a plus
