Senior Manager, Program Management

Our Developer Platform & Infrastructure team provides the technology, operations, and infrastructure that empower Expedia’s employees and products worldwide. DP&I teams are diverse – we build and maintain developer platforms and infrastructure like Data Centers, Continuous Delivery Platforms, and Collaboration Tools.

The Strategic Initiatives team works across the many groups and products that make up DP&I to deliver large, complex technology initiatives. The Senior Manager of Program Management will play a meaningful role supporting the Strategic Initiatives team and the broader Platform and Marketplaces group. You will shape the future of Expedia by bringing a blend of product, strategy, and program management competencies to our high visibility portfolio of initiatives. This role is unique and inherently cross-functional - you will work with your team of program managers to deliver a portfolio of programs that are critical to our Developer Platform & Infrastructure team. This role is a unique opportunity to both directly manage initiatives as well as lead a team of program managers.

What you’ll do:

Initiative leadership & program management (50%)

  • You will lead large, long-range initiatives while delivering value incrementally by operating in an agile, rapid development environment

  • You will operate effectively within the organization's formal and informal structures by building relationships across departments and understanding the roles and perspectives of diverse partner groups

  • You will assist DP&I leaders in program setup and workstream structuring for cross-functional initiatives

  • You will identify, understand, and incorporate inter-dependencies into initiative planning

  • You will work across team boundaries with multiple product and program managers to appropriately prioritize work to align with overall initiative goals

  • You will actively identify and drive resolution on cross-team issues, scope changes, resource constraints, and other impediments

  • You will ensure assigned cross-functional Initiatives are reporting meaningful status and progress

  • You will work to continually build knowledge about our products, capabilities, usage, and future partner needs

  • You will craft solutions that empower our business to scale and adapt by partnering with our brand and business partners to solve problems

  • You will communicate and influence product strategy direction across products and brand product managers to ensure end-to-end solutions

People Management (50%)

  • You will provide direct oversight of a portion of the Strategic Initiatives portfolio ensuring that programs are delivered on time and within their agreed-to scope and budget

  • You will coach and mentor your team of program managers, guiding them to new career heights by challenging them to be their best every day and setting a new bar for excellence in program management

  • You will lead by example by becoming an expert in the DP&I Strategic Initiatives best practices and demonstrating them for your team. Best practices include flexible methodologies, proactive issue and risk management, continuous improvement, feedback and retrospection, and transparency

  • You will help with program intake by collecting new program requests, triaging them against the current portfolio, and working with the team director to determine which efforts will be accepted and staffed

  • You will manage the team bandwidth and program allocations, ensuring that team members are appropriately allocated and not overburdened

  • You will ensure the team is continuously improving by constantly collecting feedback on individual and team performance and integrating that feedback into individual development plans and team operational improvements

Who you are:

Software Product Strategy & Program Management

  • Experience owning or influencing product strategy & vision, roadmaps, and backlog prioritization

  • Proven ability to understand and discuss technical concepts, manage trade-offs and evaluate opportunistic new ideas with internal and external partners

  • Experience utilizing Agile, Waterfall, and hybrid methodologies

Leadership / Interpersonal / Communication

  • Demonstrated ability to deliver results through complex cross-functional teams

  • Excellent communication, influencing and relationship building skills, and experience working with senior management

  • Experience working cross-culturally and leading cross-functionally, and ability to adapt personal style to different environments

  • Passion for coaching and mentoring team members

Problem Solving / Structuring / Analytical Abilities

  • Strong strategic and critical thinking skills; ability to see the “big picture” while also diving into details as necessary

  • Creative decision maker who can apply quantitative rigor to complex analyses and tradeoff decisions

  • Strong program planning skills with proven ability to structure large initiatives in effective and meaningful ways

Experience/Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Computer Science, Engineering or related technical field; or Equivalent related professional experience

  • MBA or advanced degree strongly preferred; or Equivalent related professional experience

  • 7+ years of related experience in a premier consulting firm, technology platform product management and/or large transformational program management

  • Experience with customer service, financial, and/or ERP platform products, preferably in an ecommerce environment, is a plus

  • 3+ years of proven experience in people management
