Director, Engineering, RPT Lodging, Reservations

Job Description 

The Retail Product and Technology Lodging Reservations team is responsible for the technology that powers the reservation experience for Expedia Group’s Hotels.com and Vrbo brands.

What you’ll do:

As a Director of software engineering, you will be responsible for a diverse team of engineers and managers. You will bring your experience and strategic thought leadership to help us drive work that benefits the organization. You will look for inefficiencies across broad portions of the local org as well as advocate for broad cultural shifts to improve the local organization and Expedia Group. You and your teams will deliver collaborate with your product counterparts to define a roadmap of feature and technology work to help meet our business goals.

  • Identify the interrelatedness of work activities across teams and recommend improvements to processes to increase effectiveness
  • Remove team barriers to implementing new ideas or approaches by securing the necessary resources or support from senior management
  • Ensure process improvement initiatives, focus on measurable results, and help teams establish measures of success
  • Work with your teams to define a high-level technology strategy for your areas of responsibility that aligns to wider tech strategies and north stars for Expedia Group
  • Contribute to the overall retail Lodging technology strategy

Who you are:

  • Strong hands-on technical expertise across cloud (mostly AWS), web services (mostly RESTful and gRPC based, implemented in Java and starting to do some Kotlin), APIs (lots of OpenAPI), distributed databases like DynamoDB and Cassandra. and e-commerce architectures
  • Open source mindset and keen to apply to internal development as well
  • Strong business and technical vision
  • Ability to prioritise multiple ambitious priorities in a fast-paced, multi-matrixed environment
  • 5+ years as a people manager
  • 12+ years’ experience as a Developer or equivalent experience
  • Works with multiple teams across the business unite and enables the team with rewards and recognition
  • Builds strong teams by mentoring managers to empower team members within and outside of the organization
  • Define teams’ goals to solve a business need across entire business unit
  • Delivers solutions to business problems spanning BU
  • Influences and delivers across multiple teams spanning BU, working in collaboration with product team

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and own the product development lifecycle to reduce time to market, improve product quality and ensure product success
  • Partner with leaders across all Expedia Group to collaboratively solve problems
  • Support and inform Expedia Group leaders via a community of practice and product reviews
  • Establish relationships with leaders across the organization to understand business problems and apply a technology lens to solve them   
  • Identify areas for improvement and develop innovative enhancements using available software development tools following design requirements of customer
  • Advocate for designing software that is scalable, resilient, and stable
  • Partner with the business to integrate new technologies into business solutions; create and communicate a vision of the technology requirements for the future state of the business.
  • Present work for upcoming planned efforts and enumerate risks and opportunities associated with those efforts. 
  • Create contingency resource plans to ensure continuity of work processes in the face of a delay or shortage in financial/material resources
  • Combine and share knowledge and skills in more than one functional area to promote efficiency in the department or business unit/function
  • Facilitate cross-team and cross-divisional movement of talent as a tool for building skills, capabilities, and creating visibility to talent
  • Analyse team educational and training needs and develop programs or recruit specialists to meet those training needs.
