Are you passionate about solving real world problems with sophisticated machine learning methods?

Expedia is looking for a machine learning scientist/practitioner to join the core data science team that powers marketplace design and yield management for Expedia Group (Expedia,, Vrbo, Travelocity, Orbitz, Wotif and others). Our mission spans many areas that are core to our business, including search and sort, pricing, revenue management and geography. Your work will affect millions of our customers and will have a direct impact on our business results.

This position will be an important member of the team that powers our travel platform monetization system. Our challenges include setting up the efficient travel package price, deciding platform fees to satisfy travelers, partners and platform separate needs. Monetization is a very exciting problem space, which is an interaction of machine learning, optimization, and economics. At the same time, our work has a huge financial impact. This is an applied scientist role – your models will be deployed to our production systems and your results will be measured objectively via A/B testing. We are looking for the data scientists who are passionate about applying prediction, causal inference and/or optimal decision making to solve the challenges.

Expedia has deep and rich data sets, many still untapped, and your passion for the craft of statistics and machine learning has the power to unlock tangible growth for our business. We are looking for someone with hands on experience building machine learning models, either in an academic or industrial setting. You should have an advanced degree (PhD preferred) in machine learning / computer science or other quantitative fields. Applicants from outside the machine learning field will be encouraged to demonstrate equivalent knowledge.


  • Understand the business problem, identify the key challenges, formulate the machine learning problem and provide/prototype solutions

  • Be able to debug and correct your data assumption through A/B testing

  • Document the technical details of your work

  • Collaborate and brainstorm with other team members

  • Assess the methodological and functional pros and cons of implementing third-party products versus building an in-house system when facing a business problem.

  • Collaborate extensively with partners, program management, and software development team members to ensure that solutions meet business needs, permit valid inferences, and have functional feasibility.


  • PhD or MS in Computer Science, Statistics, Math, Operations Research, Economics or equivalent quantitative fields.

  • 3+ years industry experience and hands on experience building machine learning models in production environments.

  • Deep understanding of modern machine learning techniques and their mathematical underpinning.

  • Strong algorithm design and programming skills in at least one high level language like C++/Java/Scala, and scripting languages like Python/R

  • Experience with distributed computing (Hadoop/Spark)

  • Experience with deep learning technologies

  • Hands-on experience with large scale marketplace experiment design and analysis

  • Passion for solving exciting, real-world problems using principled techniques and practices

  • 2+ years’ experience of working with live data (data cleaning, data visualization and modeling)

  • Collaborates well in a team and takes a proactive approach to clients' needs, while developing warm relationships

  • Experience with documenting, synthesizing, and presenting results.
