Software Development Engineer I 

Expedia Group is seeking a motivated engineer with a passion for technology, problem solving, and out-of-the-box thinking to be part of our Retail Partnerships Team. As a Software Development Engineer, you will be part of an agile development team with lots of big data processing experience, and plenty of full-stack skills for producing great customer experiences. We have a very experienced, successful, and hard-working cross-functional team. We work in a fast-paced environment and on highly visible projects. 

Expedia’s Retail Partnerships team is responsible for building accelerators, products, and processes that power the affiliate marketing platform for all of Expedia’s brands.  

What you’ll do: 

Your primary responsibility will be to conceptualize, design, develop, document and manage software systems supporting the Retail Martech team’s affiliate marketing platform.  


  • You will proactively reach out to meet peers across environment and collaborate to solve complex and outstanding problems of scale 
  • You collaborate with the team in coding, analysis and large-scale system design 

Leadership and Mentoring 

  • You will get to expand your skills in developing high quality, distributed and scalable software 
  • You will take advantage of opportunities to build new technical expertise in a specific engineering area 
  • You will learn best practices and will have an opportunity to grow to the next level 

Systems and Technological Integration 

  • You understand the importance of system and technology integration and the basic features and facilities involved in the integration process 

Application Development /Programming 

  • You will develop and test standard software applications and related programs and procedures to ensure they meet design requirements 
  • You will apply software design principles, data structures and/or design patterns and computer science fundamentals to write code that is clean, maintainable, optimized, modular with good naming conventions 
  • You will apply knowledge of database design to solve data requirements 

Systems Thinking 

  • You will helps coordinate stakeholder input and collaboration efforts when developing solutions to issues 
  • You will think broadly and understand how, why and when policies/processes are standardized and when they differ across the organization 
  • You will execute tasks and/or provides data to support implementation of holistic solutions that forge linkages between structure, people, process and technology 


  • You can apply formal training methods to current workload.  You feel comfortable challenging authority/the status quo 

Technical Communication/Presentation 

  • You report clearly on current work status.  You ask challenging questions when empowered to do so 

Continuous Delivery

  • Automation of application deployments, detect and repair problems in deployments 
  • Debug production and pre-production environments 

Have the ability to explore/use a wide variety of technologies and tools 

Take ownership of high stress scenarios by remaining calm, employing critical thinking and data driven decision-making practices 

Conduct on-call duties and be a part of the rotation 

Who you are: 

  • 4+ years experience in software development  

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, or related technical field; or equivalent practical experience 

  • Experience in one or more of: Java and Java Frameworks, React.js, Node, GraphQL 

  • Familiar with MVC framework and web services (REST) 

  • Understanding of Object-Oriented Programming concepts, data structure, algorithms, and system level programming (including multi-threaded programming) 

  • Ability to test and monitor your own code 

  • Ability to debug applications 

  • Understanding of testing and monitoring tools. 

  • Exposure to cloud computing and Amazon Web Services (AWS) 

  • Familiar with Continuous Integration tools (Jenkins or similar) 

  • Exposure to Unix/Linux systems is a plus 

  • Understanding of Agile, Scrum, Kanban or other development processes and methodologies
