An exciting opportunity has arisen at Vrbo for a Software Development Engineer III (Scala) within our UK team. This role would suit an experienced software developer to make their mark in an innovative and growing tech company. To help millions of travellers looking for great places to stay in for their vacations, Vrbo, along with all the sites in its portfolio, needs to be at the forefront of their travel planning. We are developing technological solutions to automate the process of sending the right marketing message to the right customer at the right time in the right advertising platform

We are developing technological solutions to automate the process of sending the right marketing message to the right customer at the right time in the right advertising platform. We generate product feeds by leveraging data streamed from many sources, crunching content from large amounts of data in the cloud from multiple data sources and distributing this to advertising platforms (Google, Facebook and Criteo) millions of times a day. Using machine learning on customer behavior, current trends, geo and event information, we automate the process of smart bidding on various platforms to drive customer visits to Vrbo and help them find their dream vacation.

What you’ll do:

As a Software Development Engineer III, you will help us build highly performant and scalable real-time systems to make effective decisions on the fly, taking advantage of large distributed datasets and machine learning.

Working primarily on a backend stack with a Scala/Java based streaming system, leveraging various web services and mentored by an experienced team of disciplined developers, you will be a crucial part of a fast paced environment helping us target relevant audience in a highly competitive market. Being at the forefront of engineering sophisticated solutions with a focus on marketing, in conjunction with players like Google and Facebook, you will get the chance to directly impact our conversion rates, with every change you make.

Application Development /Programming:

  • You will develop and test complex or non-routine software applications and related programs and procedures to ensure they meet design requirements.
  • You will write code that is clean, maintainable, optimized, modular with good naming conventions. You will also use software frameworks to write simpler code.
  • You will solve data requirements by applying your knowledge of databases and database design principles to solve data requirements.
  • You will lead/clarify code evolution in code reviews.

Systems Thinking:

  • You will coordinate bringing together different stakeholders with varied perspectives to develop solutions to issues and contributes own suggestions.
  • You will identify opportunities around policies/ processes to increase efficiency across organizational boundaries.
  • You will assist with a whole systems approach to analyzing issues by ensuring all components (structure, people, process and technology) are identified and accounted for.
     

Innovation:

  • You will spot areas of inefficiency in code or systems operation and offer suggestions for improvements.

Technical Communication/Presentation:

  • You will compile and generate reports on major operational or technical initiatives (like RCAs) to larger groups, whether via written or oral means.

Who you are:

  • Bachelor's degree or Masters in a related Technical field; or Equivalent related professional experience.
  • Prior experience as a Software Engineer mentoring junior engineers and applying new engineering principles to improve existing systems including leading complex, well defined projects.
  • Equivalent experience includes:
    • Developed software in Scala and libraries, Experience with large scale streaming systems like Kafka, Experience with different data storage mechanisms like Cassandra
    • Maintained/ran at least 4 software project/product in production environments (bug fixing, troubleshooting, monitoring etc.)
  • Able to identify strengths and weaknesses among languages for particular use cases
  • Able to create API's to be consumed across the BU
  • Demonstrates the ability to select among technology available to implement and solve for need
  • Understanding how projects/teams interact with other teams
  • Able to understand and design moderately complex systems
  • Ability to test and monitor code at the project level
  • Understanding of testing and monitoring tools – Knowledge of TDD and BDD
  • Ability to debug applications
  • Ability to test, debug, fix issues within established SLAs
  • Able to design software that is easily testable and observable
  • Understanding of how teams’ goals fit a business need
  • Ability to identify business problems at the project level and provide solutions
  • Understands how teams' goals fit a business need.
  • Knowledge of Agile methodologies, such as Scrum and Kanban
  • Identifies business problems at the project level and provides solutions.
