Engineering Manager

Australia - Sydney

We believe travel enriches our lives and connects us to each other. Our Expedia Flights team is dedicated to building experiences that help travelers like you go places and makes our world more connected. We are a global team with representation in the United States, Mexico, Australia and India. Our Flights Shopping Platform is one of the largest in the world serving over 150 million queries a day and powering some of the strongest brands in the industry like Orbitz, Expedia, Travelocity, Wotif, Hotwire and ebookers. Expedia disrupted the airline industry with its flight shopping and booking technology 20 years ago. We always want to “be the place travelers choose to explore and book flights for a trip” and are looking for talent to join us and build technology and experiences that power these.

We are looking for a passionate Software Engineering Manager to lead our Flights Product Engineering teams.  We are responsible for building the best flights shopping and booking experiences for our customers.  We want you to bring your skills to our agile environment as we move from revolutionizing the web to redefining the mobile travel experience.  From the back-end supply and database functions, to new user-interfaces for our more than 140 branded travel sites, there is no shortage of technical innovation as we push the frontiers of technology.

What's in it for you?

Beyond travel perks and other competitive benefits, you can walk away from work each day knowing you truly made an impact. You can create a new feature that goes on the live site. You can build programs that streamline our backend search and supply processes. You can help localize content and systems globally. And you can do this all while working alongside smart, passionate techies who love travel to their core.

We are looking for a passionate individual with hands-on technical skills and an interest in managing teams to help develop, test and provide production support of the team's components and applications.  A successful person in this role will be unafraid to get into the details of our solutions, guide and vet ideas with the teams, tackle end-to-end ownership of systems and work in coordination with Engineers, Product Management, Architects, and Operational peers As a hands-on leader, your responsibility will be to manage a team of software engineers, ensure project delivery and build systems to help test and analyze our search engine's functional and competitive performance.

Further, you will have the opportunity to understand and shape the marketplace landscape we are looking to create, solve some wickedly hard problems, and influence design decisions that can have a large impact across the company. Sound like an interesting challenge? Success in the position requires you to be able to work effectively in various SDLC styles and effectively collaborate and problem solve with peers across several teams and disciplines. Your systems will be expected to explore use cases of the product, validate functional correctness, and ensure we meet the levels of scalability and robustness needed for this extremely high-volume and high-visibility product.

Bring your programming smarts, problem solving skills, and passion for software engineering and join us as we solidify and grow our position as the leaders in the travel industry.  This is a team filled with people who love technology and work with a high level of initiative and teamwork. We enjoy working with each other and endeavor to continually improve and grow in our understanding and the craft of creating great software.

Who you are:

  •  Engineering excellence. You have at least 5-7 years of industry experience managing teams in a variety of contexts, during which you’ve built insanely scalable, robust, and fault-tolerant systems. You have a solid knowledge of the whole web stack: front-end, back-end, databases, cache layer, big data, cloud computing etc.
  • Bias towards action. You believe that speed and quality aren’t mutually exclusive. You’ve shown good judgement about shipping as fast as possible while still making sure that products are built in a sustainable, responsible way — and you’re comfortable making mistakes, provided you learn from them.
  • Production Excellence: You are not afraid to be on a call solving most critical production issues that affects millions of customers, learn from the issues and constantly improve monitoring and fault tolerance of the systems.
  • Superior management skills. You know that the most important part of your job is setting the team up for success. You lead from the front and help other engineers make sound architectural decisions, improve their code quality, and get out of their comfort zone.
  • Scale. You love solving tough problems and understand that with scale comes complexity but are not afraid to deal with complex systems.
  • Hiring prowess. You’re a strong interviewer who constantly raises the bar for excellence. You believe that what seems amazing one day becomes the norm the next day, and that every new hire should significantly improve the team.
