Privacy Counsel



Privacy Counsel has responsibility in managing significant litigation for the Expedia Group companies worldwide. The Expedia in-house privacy team consists of experienced attorneys and paralegals who advise all Expedia Group brands worldwide on compliance with global privacy laws. 

The position will manage privacy matters in the Asia-Pacific Region for all Expedia Group brands, including responding to inquiries from privacy regulators, assisting customer service with privacy complaints, tracking privacy legislation in the region, advising on privacy and data security handling provisions in contracts, providing privacy training to business clients, and managing outside counsel resources in the region.  This position will be based in Singapore and report to the Senior Director – Global Privacy.

What you’ll do:

  • Advise legal and business teams on compliant and optimal use of personal information across Expedia Group brands, with a focus on the Asia-Pacific Region.
  • Review and document internal and external procedures and controls related to data handling, including transferring and accessing personal data
  • Monitor developments in privacy laws and regulatory guidance in the Asia-Pacific Region; keep the business and legal teams apprised of changes
  • Proactively manage Asia-Pacific privacy notices, privacy policies and regulatory filings.
  • Assist with customer and employee data related requests.
  • Support business and legal colleagues with review and negotiation of applicable privacy language for affiliate, vendor and client agreements.
  • Provide training to business and legal teams on privacy matters.
  • Develop standardized privacy and data security contract addenda.
  • Direct research and other work with regional outside legal counsel.

Who you are:

You have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and a desire for continuous self-improvement.  You are a quick learner, you thrive in a team environment and you look for opportunities to take initiative.  You solve legal problems in innovative and commercially pragmatic ways and partner strongly with your business and legal colleagues. Plus:

  • A law degree with qualification to practice in Singapore, or qualification in another common law jurisdiction.
  • Six years relevant legal experience as a practicing attorney with at least three years core focus on privacy in a top-notch law firm and/or in a fast-paced in-house legal environment.
  • Good understanding of e-commerce technologies and business models, including location-based services, behavioral targeting, and online advertising; understanding of how privacy law and regulation applies.
  • Ability to assess and communicate risk within the context of business-driven goals.
  • Ability to work on a wide range of complex matters with minimal supervision.
  • Track record of establishing strong working relationships with business clients and with legal colleagues.•Ability to work on complex matters with minimal supervision
  • Some transactional contract experience a plus
  • International experience and in-house experience are a plus
